Based on the number of cases so far this year, 2012 looks like it will have one of the worst outbreaks of mosquito-borne West Nile virus in the U.S. to date, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced during a media telebriefing this week.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last week announced approval of a new vaccine formulation for the 2012-2013 influenza season. In related news, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued revised flu vaccine guidelines, keeping in place the recommendation that all people age 6 months and older should receive a vaccine for the upcoming flu season.

Increasing fears about the emergence of antibiotic resistant gonorrhea in the U.S. have prompted new treatment and surveillance recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Janssen Research & Development this week submitted a New Drug Application requesting U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) accelerated approval of bedaquiline (formerly TMC207), which would be the first drug for difficult-to-treat multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB).
